Torch-On Felt Roofing
High-performance built-up felt, applied in multiple layers for a hard-wearing, fully bonded finish. A dependable, cost-effective flat roofing choice for Guildford extensions, garages and outbuildings.
From a leaking garage roof to a full commercial re-cover, we install, repair and replace flat roofs across Guildford in every major system — and we tell you honestly which one suits your building.
There is no single best flat roof. The right choice depends on the size and shape of the roof, how it drains, whether it is walked on or overlooked, and what you want to spend. We will talk you through it before you commit.
High-performance built-up felt, applied in multiple layers for a hard-wearing, fully bonded finish. A dependable, cost-effective flat roofing choice for Guildford extensions, garages and outbuildings.
Single-ply rubber membrane laid in one seamless sheet, so there are no joins for water to find. Highly flexible and weather-resistant, making it well suited to Surrey’s wet winters.
Glass-reinforced polyester cured in place to form a rigid, seamless flat roof with a clean, modern finish. An excellent option where the roof is walked on or overlooked from above.
Leaks, splits, blistering, failed flashing and standing water traced back to the source and put right properly — not patched over and left to fail again next winter.
Full strip-off and rebuild when a flat roof has reached the end of its life, including deck repairs, upgraded insulation and new drainage falls where they are needed.
Ponding is the single biggest cause of flat roof failure. We re-profile falls, refit outlets and correct guttering so water leaves the roof instead of sitting on it.
Flat roofing suits a lot of Guildford properties: rear extensions, garages and outbuildings, dormer cheeks and tops, porches, and the many flat-roofed sections on 1960s and 1970s housing around Merrow and Burpham. Done well, it is clean-looking, cost-effective and completely undramatic — which is exactly what you want from a roof.
Every job starts with a survey. We need to see the deck, the falls, how the roof drains and how it meets the walls around it, because those are the things that decide whether a new covering lasts twenty years or five. Only then do we quote, and the quote sets out the system, the build-up and a realistic time frame.
If your existing roof is past saving, we strip it back to the deck, make good or replace any rotten boarding, correct the falls, upgrade insulation where building regulations require it, and lay the new covering with fresh edge trims, upstands and lead work. Old materials go with us, and the site is left clean.
Water rarely comes in where it shows up inside. It travels along the deck, follows a joist and drops through the ceiling somewhere else entirely. That is why patching the wet patch so often fails — the actual defect is still up there, several feet away.
We work back from the stain to find where the water is genuinely getting in, then fix that. Common culprits on Guildford flat roofs are split or lifted seams, blistering where moisture is trapped under the covering, perished upstands where the roof meets a wall, failed or badly dressed lead flashings, cracked mortar fillets, and outlets blocked with moss and grit from the roof surface itself.
We also carry out routine maintenance — a yearly look over the covering, clearing the outlets and re-sealing anything that is starting to go. It costs very little and it is far cheaper than a ceiling.
We prioritise active leaks and can often make a roof watertight straight away while a permanent repair is scheduled.
Flat roofing is our focus on this site, but GK Foster & Son Roofing is a full roofing contractor. If your flat roof work sits alongside something else, we can take care of that at the same time rather than you finding a second trade.
We will always tell you honestly. If the deck is sound and the problem is localised — a split seam, failed flashing or a blocked outlet — a repair is usually the sensible option. If the covering has reached the end of its life or water has been sitting in the insulation, repairs become a false economy and we will say so rather than take the smaller job.
Flat roofs are never truly flat — they are built with a slight fall so water runs to an outlet. Ponding means the fall has been lost, usually through deck deflection, an original build that was never laid to fall, or a blocked outlet. Standing water accelerates covering failure, so it is worth correcting rather than living with.
Yes. We work throughout Guildford and the surrounding villages, including Merrow, Burpham, Onslow Village, Shalford, Worplesdon, Ash, Normandy, Send, Ripley and Chilworth. If you are just outside that list, call us — we will tell you straight away whether we can help.
It comes down to the size of the roof, the system you choose, the condition of the deck underneath and whether access needs scaffolding. We do not quote blind — we survey the roof first, then give you a clear written quote with no obligation, so you know exactly what you are paying for.
We do. Alongside domestic extensions, garages and dormers, we take on commercial and industrial flat roofing across Guildford. The principles are the same; the scale, access and phasing are what change.
